The term 'vibes' gets thrown around too often in music today. It's nothing but a vague descriptor for sonically pleasing grooves and sounds. But here I am, after having just listened to Philadelphia artist Anyee Wright's newly released, self-produced BUSY, and it's hard to describe the stellar project as anything but straight vibes. This is groove music you throw on whether you're walking downtown on a hot Tuesday afternoon or it's 1AM on a Thursday night and you find yourself cruising up the boulevard, top down with nothing but a couple homies and a backwoods to pass around. And all credit goes to the star of the show who's not only the voice of the project but also the mastermind behind the release's eclectic hip hop soundscapes.
On BUSY we get a musical visionary who oozes complete confidence. Rap world has always been about bravado and braggadocio, but it's not always you believe an emcee's convictions on the mic. Anyee doesn't have that problem. From the first words in "Fire" to the stand-out single "Sonya Blade" to the mic-dropping bars on the project's closer "Street Smart", you believe every syllable coming out of the songstress's mouth. And with fun pop culture references and a sexy delivery that's at times approaching spoken word, the songs feel both relevant and honest.
The style of BUSY finds a comfortable balance between 90's R&B attitude and modern hip hop sounds without falling into tired trap clichés. The soundwork by Philly engineer Justin Miller gives room for Anyee's beats and bars to breath with slick reverb and balanced levels, producing an organic feel that's not easy to come by in our Soundcloud-dominated world.
We'd love to hear what Anyee can do with today's hottest producers, and after this self-produced project, she's going to be pretty busy deciding who she wants to work with next. Peep BUSY below:
